2 Days , 1 Night Mt. Elgon Sasa Trail Trek

Access & Logistics

• The journey from Mbale to the Budadiri UWA Office is approximately 52 km and takes about 1 hour by road.
• An early start is recommended, with arrival at the Budadiri UWA Office by 8:00 am.
• From the Budadiri UWA Office, continue to Elgon Trekking Services Basecamp, located just above Bugiboni Village.
• The basecamp is approximately a 30-minute drive from the Budadiri UWA Office.
• A morning briefing will be conducted before the trek begins.

Day 1: Hike to Hunwick’s Camp (2,882m) or Sasa River Camp (2,880m)

Scenic Trek Along the Dirigana River

• Begin the trek from Elgon Trekking Services Basecamp and follow the community trail along the scenic Dirigana River.
• Continue through the beautiful landscape towards the spectacular Nabunyifu Falls.
• Cross the dramatic bridge directly beneath the 61-metre waterfall.
• Ascend through lush montane forest while enjoying the beautiful vegetation and surrounding mountain scenery.
• Continue along the trail towards a peaceful bend in the river.
• Enjoy lunch beside the river and take time to rest and appreciate the tranquil surroundings.
• After lunch, continue the gradual ascent towards Mukoola Ridge.
• Reach the ridge and enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and Mbale City.
• Continue towards your overnight campsite.

Overnight: Hunwick’s Camp (2,882m) or Sasa River Camp (2,880m)

Note: You can choose which camp to stay at during the morning briefing. Sasa River Camp is a great option for this trek.

Day 2: Descend to Elgon Trekking Services Basecamp

Scenic Descent Along the Dirigana River

• Enjoy breakfast at the mountain camp.
• Continue briefly uphill before beginning the descent alongside the Dirigana River.
• Follow the trail through the forest while enjoying views of the river, rapids, and small waterfalls.
• Rejoin sections of the trail used on Day 1.
• Continue descending towards Nabunyifu Falls.
• Cross the area beneath the spectacular 61-metre waterfall once again.
• Continue down the trail towards Elgon Trekking Services Basecamp.
• Arrive at the basecamp and complete the trek.
• After a short debrief, take a boda boda ride to the Budadiri UWA Office.
• Meet your vehicle at the UWA Office and transfer back to Mbale Town.
