Mount Elgon Equipment List

For 3, 4, and 5-Day Treks

Mount Elgon trekking takes you through changing temperatures and varied terrain, from the warmer lower slopes to the much colder high-altitude sections. As you climb higher, temperatures can drop considerably, especially at night and in the early morning. At around 3,500 metres, temperatures can reach as low as -3°C, while daytime temperatures may rise to approximately 18°C.

To enjoy your trek comfortably, it is important to come prepared with the right clothing and equipment. Use the checklist below to make sure you have everything you need for your time on the mountain.

Important Packing Advice

Mountain conditions can change quickly, so it is important to be prepared for sunshine, rain, wind, and cold temperatures. Pack your clothing in layers so you can easily adjust to changing conditions as you gain or lose altitude.

Keep important clothing and personal items protected from rain and moisture by using waterproof bags or a dry bag liner. Your daypack should contain everything you may need during the day’s trek, while the porter will carry the rest of your luggage.

Avoid overpacking and keep your main luggage within the 18 kg porter limit. Good preparation will help you stay comfortable and enjoy the scenery, trails, forests, and high-altitude landscapes of Mount Elgon.
