About Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park, nestled in southwestern Uganda, is a haven of biodiversity and natural beauty. Spanning 370 square kilometers, it’s home to more than 70 species of mammals, 450 species of birds, and 400 types of plants. But what truly sets this park apart is its stunning chain of lakes, wetlands, and diverse wildlife experiences.
A Network of Five Connected Lakes
Lake Mburo is the largest of five interconnected lakes within the park. The others—Lake Kigambira, Kabikwa, Kazuma, and Bwara—are separated only by wetlands and share the same water system. These lakes are rich in fish and attract large numbers of fish storks, making them perfect for spot fishing and birdwatching.
Getting There
Lake Mburo National Park lies between the towns of Masaka and Mbarara, roughly 228 kilometers—or a four-hour drive—from Kampala, Uganda’s capital. It can also be accessed from Kibale National Park via Ibanda and Rushere, or from Queen Elizabeth National Park through Ishaka and Mbarara.
The park has three main entrances:
- Kyanyanshara Gate – 14 km west of Lyantonde
- Nshara Gate – 9 km from the main road
- Sanga Gate – 13 km via a dirt road from Sanga Trading Centre
What to See and Do
Wildlife viewing is the highlight of any visit to Lake Mburo. The park is known for its large population of zebras, and it's one of the few places in Uganda where you can see elands and giraffes. Other animals include buffaloes, leopards, hippos, warthogs, monkeys, and even a lion.
Game drives, both day and night, offer excellent opportunities to spot animals in their natural habitat. Boat cruises on the eastern shores of Lake Mburo, departing from the jetty near Rwonyo Rest Camp, bring you close to hippos, crocodiles, and bird species like the African fish eagle, pelicans, finfoot, and even the elusive shoebill stork.
For a more immersive experience, take a nature walk with an armed ranger or hike up Kigarama Hill for sweeping panoramic views of the park. The Salt Lick Walk is another highlight, where visitors can watch animals gather at a salt lick from a raised timber platform.
A Park with a Rich History
Lake Mburo was designated a game reserve in 1964 and later gazetted as a national park in 1983. However, its use as a hunting ground dates back as far as 1935. Today, it stands as one of Uganda’s most accessible and unique wildlife destinations offering adventure, tranquility, and unmatched beauty.
